THE WILLIAMSBURG WINERY The 18th-century styled Winery buildings, 2 miles from the Historic Area, are surrounded by over 50 acres of vineyards. Professionally guided 30-45 minute tours through the Winery, museum and underground barrel cellars cover the wine making process, from viticulture, harvesting and crushing, through fermentation, aging and bottling as well as the history of the Winery. Visitors enjoy a tasting of seven wines after the tour and receive an etched tasting glass. BERKELEY PLANTATION Berkeley is Virginia's most historic plantation. On December 4, 1619, early settlers from England came ashore at Berkeley Plantation and observed the first official Thanksgiving in America.See the birthplace of Benjamin Harrison, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and President William Henry Harrison, "Old Tippecanoe." "Taps" was composed at Berkeley when General McClellan headquartered 100,000 Union troops in 1862. We invite you to experience Berkeley's famous hospitality, as did the first 10 presidents. An architectural gem, the 1726 Georgian mansion is furnished with rare period antiques. Berkeley's grounds are its crowning jewel. Five terraces of restored boxwood and flower gardens offer breathtaking vistas of the James River. |
SHIRLEY PLANTATION A visit to Shirley Plantation is a step back into American history. Virginia's oldest plantation, Shirley was settled in 1613. Knowledgeable interpreters in the main house offer a unique look at the Hill-Carter family, who have lived at Shirley continuously for nearly four centuries, including members of the current 10th and 11th generations. The main house, begun in 1723, reflects Queen Anne architecture and inside, features the famous square three-story flying stairway, unique to North America. Antique family portraits, silver, furniture and finely carved 18th-century paneling and moldings also remain. Robert E. Lee's mother, Ann Hill Carter, was born, raised and married here. Visitors can explore seven original early 18th-century brick outbuildings, four of which form a rare Queen Anne Forecourt. A lovely James River setting, grounds and gardens, working farm and specialty gift shop complete a unique experience. Special events are held throughout the year. |
